Nod to watchdog on Asean energy rules
Southeast Asian countries will establish the Asean Energy Regulators Network (AERN) as the major organisation overseeing the region’s energy regulation.
The agreement was made at the third AERN Academic Conference in
Thailand on Monday.
Energy regulators from 11 countries came together to exchange knowledge, opinions and experiences in promoting energy conservation in Southeast Asia.
Direk Lavansiri, chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) of Thailand, said each member country had demonstrated efforts to cooperate in energy regulatory development within Asean and also expedite the cooperation to be more concrete.
The agreement is an initial and pivotal step in developing the major organisation in overseeing Asean energy regulation to be in line with current energy development and to prepare for the Asean Economic Community coming up in 2015.
The scope of cooperation and a collaborative performance plan will be elaborated in the future.
For the academic seminar on “Energy Regulation and the Promotion of Energy Conservation”, some countries presented their projects involving demand-side management and demand response.
